Pet Surgery: A Safe, Compassionate Approach
Surgery for your pet is never an easy thing. Even routine procedures such as spay and neuter still come with their risks and potential complications. At Companion Animal Hospital Oak Park, our skilled veterinarians and technicians use the latest technology and best practices to perform pet surgery that is as safe and painless as possible. Still, we know you'll have your concerns. That's why we keep you informed throughout the entire process -- from pre-surgery blood work to post-surgical recovery. We believe communication is an essential part of gaining your trust and ensuring you that your beloved furry family member is in good hands.
Surgery Safety Protocols
Through every procedure, safety is our number one priority. To minimize risks and keep your pet as comfortable as possible, we take certain steps before, during, and after surgery.
Before any procedure, we perform blood work and a physical exam. This step ensures that your pet is healthy enough to undergo anesthesia. Blood work will reveal any hidden health concerns, so if your pet is ill or there is a reason to believe the surgery will be risky, we may postpone. Every decision made is meant to benefit your pet!
Next, we administer pain medication. We provide pain management before the surgery so that the moment your pet wakes up, their pain is already under control. Pain medication will also be prescribed for after the surgery, so you can take care of your pet at home and minimize their discomfort.
Our state-of-the-art equipment and skilled team monitor your pet continuously throughout their procedure. With an IV catheter providing fluids to your pet, to the veterinary technician always standing by, we leave no stone unturned. Our monitoring equipment tracks your pet’s blood pressure, heart rate, respiratory rate, oxygen levels, and temperature. If any changes occur, we’ll know immediately, and be able to react accordingly.
Detailed at-home care instructions are sent home after every pet surgery so you know what to expect with your pet’s recovery. Each pet is different, so patience and attentive care is needed throughout the healing process. Pain management will be prescribed as needed, as well as any antibiotics or other medications that can assist in a speedy recovery.

Companion Animal Hospital of Oak Park had always a been amazing with Koda. He is a very nervous dog at the vet but they always do their best to make him feel comfortable. This was his first major operation and they put our minds at ease by sending photos of him after the procedure. Such a great vet!
Minimally Invasive Surgery
Current technology such as endoscopy allows us to see the inner workings of your pet with minimal damage. Endoscopy uses a small flexible tube with a tiny video camera at the end. We can insert it into any small orifice to examine your pet’s gastrointestinal tract, ear cavities, and even open wounds. Additionally, we can collect biopsy samples without having to perform major exploratory surgery. We always utilize anesthesia during these procedures, but recovery time is minimal.
